Area municipalities receive main street revitalization funding

January 26, 2018

Municipalities across Perth-Wellington will receive funding to support the revitalization of downtown and main streets.

According to a government press release, the funds will support improvements including installation of pedestrian crosswalks or landscaping. It also states that municipalities can direct funding to businesses to improve the appearance of their storefronts by installing lighting or signage.

The following municipalities in Perth-Wellington will receive funds:

Township of Mapleton: 44,960
Town of Minto: 43,388
Township of Wellington North: 46,135
Municipality of North Perth: 47,165
Municipality of West Perth: 43,552
Township of Perth East: 46,429
Township of Perth South: 39,271
City of Stratford: 54,980
Town of St. Marys: 42,197

“I want to congratulate all the municipalities I represent,” he said. “They will put that money to good use.”Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece supported the investments, but said the government needs to do more.

“Unfortunately, the province is still shortchanging small and rural municipalities.”

Municipalities are struggling, he explained, from cuts to the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF)—the main transfer payment from the province to municipalities.

Since 2013, the Liberals chopped $70 million out of OMPF—meaning that many municipalities have no choice but to increase property taxes or reduce services.
