Government takes action to restore trust and accountability in Ontario’s finances

July 20, 2018

(Queen’s Park) – This week, the newly-formed PC government led by Premier Doug Ford announced the creation of an Independent Financial Commission of Inquiry that will look into the province’s past financial practices and the state of the government’s books. In addition, the government announced a comprehensive line-by-line audit of all government spending to find efficiencies and return savings to taxpayers.

Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece saw the announcement as welcome news for taxpayers across the province.

“I’m pleased that our government is getting Ontario back on track by doing a line-by-line audit of the province’s finances”, said Pettapiece. “After years of reckless Liberal spending and phoney accounting, the Ontario PCs are finally cleaning up the books”.

The PC government is moving quickly to get the province’s books in order. To that end, the independent Financial Commission – which will operate at arm’s-length from government – has been mandated to deliver its findings by August 30, 2018.

“The people of Ontario deserve an accurate picture of the state of our finances and where tax dollars are going”, noted Pettapiece. “The commission will be given all the tools and access it needs to perform the audit, but will function at arm’s length of the government to ensure accountability.

“We’re committed to respecting your hard-earned tax dollars. We will only promise what we can deliver, and we’ll remain accountable and transparent to the people of Ontario”, he added.
